To the Editor:
After failing to write a letter to the Rustler in time for this year’s election, I realize this one is far more important. It will be published the day after Tuesday, Nov. 5th’s vote, at a time when the character of our citizenry will truly manifest.
Unlike preceding centuries, the aftermath of our last presidential election became a battleground where lies, anger, disbelief and fear became weapons, sowing division and hatred in the succeeding years.
I had the privilege of working at the polls in the last two election cycles. My experience of the professionalism and commitment to each citizen’s vote humbled me. I couldn’t find a single hint of anything on which the terrible charges leveled against election systems and those who operate them might be based. I know in my heart this is true across the entire country.
It is my firm belief and clear intention that the aftermath of this year’s presidential election will unfold with the dignity and respect citizens have always been able to put in our democratic elections.
Let us unite in understanding the privilege and responsibility conferred on us by citizenship in a great nation. May all of us, including those tempted to tear down rather than build up the people and institutions protecting democracy, recognize this truth.
Together, let’s create a future worthy of our country’s founding ideals, and good enough for all the generations to follow.
