KING CITY — Local artists of all ages are invited to participate in a new sidewalk art competition aimed at highlighting safe walking routes in King City.
Transportation Agency for Monterey County (TAMC), in partnership with the City of King and Sol Treasures, has issued a “Call for Art” for the King City Safe Routes to School Sidewalk Art project. Selected artworks will be installed along sidewalks connecting schools, parks and other community spaces.
“The King City Safe Routes to School Sidewalk Art project is a community-led effort designed to make art more accessible to people who live and stroll to school in King City,” TAMC said. “This Call for Art was developed by a steering committee made up of community members and advocates and prepared to be as inclusive as possible.”
The competition is open to Monterey County residents and includes five categories: elementary school, middle school, high school/college, adult amateur (18-plus) and professional artists. Winners in each category will receive prizes, including cash cards and art supplies, with professional artists eligible for seven extra-large submissions that can earn $4,900 each.
Art submissions can be created in various sizes ranging from 2-by-2 feet to 3-by-6 feet. Professional artists may also submit extra-large designs of up to 6-by-30 feet.
All participants will be recognized by the community, and installed artworks will be featured in a program at a future community celebration. Designs not selected for installation will be displayed online at the Monterey County Safe Routes to School program website (saferoutesmonterey.org) and shared with the City of King and community partners.
“The goal is to transform public streets into healthy spaces for kids, teachers and community members to walk, roll and move about in their neighborhoods,” TAMC said.
Applications, concept drawings and project details must be submitted by 5 p.m. on Thursday, April 16. Digital submissions can be emailed to Aaron Hernandez at Aa***@**********ey.org. Hard copy applications can be coordinated through Sol Treasures at 519 Broadway St. in King City.
The sidewalk art project is part of the larger San Antonio Drive Path and Safe Routes to Schools Improvements initiative, a collaborative effort by the City of King, TAMC, Monterey County Health Department, Ecology Action, Sol Treasures and other local partners. The project is funded through a California Active Transportation Program grant and local Measure X transportation funds.
