KING CITY — King City Rotary Club has announced the return of the Rabbit Run on Saturday, July 12, beginning at 9 a.m. at San Bernabe Vineyards in southern Monterey County.
The fourth annual fun run includes both a 5-kilometer (3.1-mile) course, 1-mile course and a new distance — a 100-yard dash for children — held once again at the San Bernabe (Delicato) Visitors Center, 53001 Oasis Road in King City.
“This year our Easter fun run was postponed to July due to scheduling conflicts,” said TJ Plew-Hearne, race event director. “We are committed to providing a fun, family- and health-focused event for South County. We hope our community will turn out to support this event that raises funds for King City scholars, too.”
While the 5-kilometer course includes rolling hills, the 1-mile course is flat and stroller accessible on the mostly dirt roads of the sprawling vineyard landscape. The race is dog-friendly, for both courses, provided the canine companion stays on leash.
Following the competition of the 5K and 1-mile events, a 100-yard dash will be held for children ages 6 or younger. Post-event celebration includes wines from Delicato available to taste for participants 21 years or older, food for purchase, family games and an awards ceremony recognizing age group winners in the 5K run.
The event proceeds will support the King City Rotary Club Foundation scholarship program, which to date has awarded more than $140,000 in scholarships to graduates of King City High School. In 2025, the Rotary Club awarded $11,000 in scholarships to six KCHS graduates — Alicia Granados, Amity Hearne, Hayden Munoz, Grace Hearne, Joaquin Arriaga and Sam Hearne.
Scholarships are funded in part from proceeds of the King City Rotary Club’s fundraising efforts and the fun run, according to Plew-Hearne.
All racers will receive a sport-style T-shirt, commemorative finisher medal and invitation to the post-event festivities at the Delicato Visitors Center, including wine tasting for adults only, with their entry fees.
Fees for adults are $45 for the 5K course and $25 for the 1-mile course. Youth fees are $25 for the 5K or $15 for the 1-mile fun run. The 100-yard dash event is a $10 entry fee and will include a T-shirt while supplies last.
Home-made carrot cakes are the traditional prizes for age-group first-place winners, by gender, in the 5-kilometer race. Prizes will be distributed in the 5K to age groups 18 and under, 19-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59 and 60 or older.
“Don’t miss your chance to run, walk or hop from the vine to the wine at the Rotary Rabbit Run,” Plew-Hearne said.
