KING CITY — King City High School is making waves this spring with the launch of its inaugural beach volleyball program.

What started as just an idea last year has become a full-fledged athletic endeavor, bringing a fresh dynamic to the school’s sports offerings. The KCHS beach volleyball program aims to build competitive teams while fostering a welcoming environment for players of all skill levels.

Currently, 10 girls have taken on the challenge of being the first competitive beach volleyball team competing in the Santa Cruz Athletic League. Each player brings an open mind to the sand courts eager to learn, build strong bonds among teammates and inspire younger athletes to get out of their comfort zones to try new things.

Under the coaching leadership of Christine Luna, Lauren Page, Jalen Mendez and Megan Flores, the team has already seen much success.

The season started Feb. 27 playing Paso Robles High School, where the girls got to experience playing on sand for the first time. Moving into March, the pairs have got a taste of success defeating both St. Abraham’s and Mt. Madonna with all pairs winning their matches.

As the season progresses, the program continues to prove itself as a valuable addition to the school’s athletic programs. Whether the team is chasing wins or celebrating player achievements, they’re writing the first chapter of what promises to be a lasting legacy.

The beach program does not currently have home courts, but plans are in the works.

Support from students, staff, families and community members is always appreciated as the girls facilitate their season.

To support the growing beach volleyball program, there will be a pancake breakfast on Saturday, March 21, at St. John’s Church in King City from 8 to 11 a.m.; walk-ins are welcome.
