KING CITY — King City High School Agriculture Department has been honored with the prestigious California Agricultural Teachers’ Association (CATA) Outstanding 4-6 Person Department Award, a recognition aimed at promoting exemplary middle and secondary programs in agricultural education.

The award celebrates the department’s commitment to providing exceptional educational pathways in agriculture, including ag science, horticulture/floral and ag mechanics. This diverse curriculum equips students with practical skills and knowledge, preparing them for future careers in the agricultural industry.

Under the leadership of dedicated educators, the KCHS Ag Department has implemented innovative programs that engage students in hands-on learning experiences. From community projects to competitions, the department emphasizes the importance of real-world applications of agricultural concepts.

The recognition not only highlights the department’s success, but also serves to share best practices and success stories with other agricultural education programs throughout California. This initiative fosters collaboration and encourages continuous improvement across the state.

Students in the King City ag program benefit from a rich educational experience, with opportunities to participate in FFA events, local agricultural fairs and internships. These experiences not only enhance their learning, but also instill a sense of community and responsibility.

As the high school celebrates this achievement, the department looks forward to continuing its mission of excellence in agricultural education, nurturing young minds and shaping the future of agriculture in California.

This has already begun for the 2024-25 school year with the growth of the King City ag program with over 850 students in agriculture classes. In addition, two new teachers have joined the KCHS Ag Department — Darcy Wetzel and Mackenzie Hearne.

This prestigious award not only reflects the department’s past successes, but also sets the stage for continued growth and innovation. With a strong team of educators, enthusiastic students and unwavering community support, the King City ag program is poised to continue its leadership in agricultural education for years to come.

“As the program expands and new educators join the team, the department is excited to inspire and equip the next generation of agricultural leaders,” Souza said. “The future of agriculture in King City and beyond looks bright.”
