KING CITY — A birthday party was held last Saturday for the King City Pool’s water slide, which turned 30 years old.
Locals in attendance were able to not only swim as usual, but also participate in a diving contest, a duck race and a dunk tank at the June 30 celebration. There was also a bake sale held right outside the pool entrance for the King City High School Cheerleaders.
“We’re happy to have it and the community loves it,” said Recreation Coordinator Andrea Wasson.
The waterslide was installed at the pool in 1988, and ran until 2012, when needs for repairs were discovered. Wasson said it took three months to raise $90,000 for repairs, with the community quickly coming to the rescue of the longtime feature in King City.
“We hope to get another 30 years out of it, at least,” Wasson said.
The pool usually has 10 staffers on duty for normal days, which Wasson said typically see the pool hit capacity of 200 by the afternoon. For the busy birthday celebration, all staff were called up so there were more than 20 lifeguards and staffers supervising the swimmers and event activities.
Volunteer Jesse Soto was also out at the grill to barbecue hot dogs for the lunch sale.
The King City Pool hosts recreational swimming as well as lap swimming, water aerobics and swim lessons. King City Recreation Department is also currently hosting its summer day camp, which has openings in the program. The department can be contacted at 385-6748.
