BIG SUR — State Highway 1 is closed in both directions Wednesday along the Big Sur coast in southern Monterey County because of fallen rocks onto the roadway, according to Caltrans.

The rockfall was reported Wednesday morning just north of the Ragged Point Inn & Resort, and crews are at the scene to assess the area and said the roadway may be closed for up to a week, Caltrans officials said.

Highway 1 is closed in both directions at Ragged Point, but is open for local travel between Carmel and Gorda.

Caltrans officials said they expect an update by the end of Thursday on how long the roadway may be closed.
