Welcome to August, which is National Back to School Month. Monterey County Free Libraries is eager to support students of all ages with their academic and learning needs in the libraries and through our online resources.

1. All MCFL branch libraries function as Student Support Centers and support students by providing free access to the following resources and services:

When available, some branches offer volunteers to assist with after-school assignments and projects.

2. In August we are featuring HelpNow by Brainfuse as our resource of the month. With a library card, students can log on to the service and ask online tutors for assistance with school assignments. HelpNow also has SkillSurfer a feature to help student reinforce learning in subjects like math and science for elementary, middle and high school students.

3. In addition, we are featuring our ProQuest resources, for students, funded by the California State Library through COMPASS, the California Online Media Program for Access and Student Success. Specifically, we wanted to highlight SIRS Issues Researcher, which reviews hot topics such as AI, cyberbullying, gun control and more. SIRS Issue Researcher presents multiple points of view on each topic.

4. August is Get Ready for Kindergarten Month. Research abounds showing that reading to children has many benefits and can help them become better readers, which can lead to academic achievement throughout their education. This month we are encouraging all parents to read to their children every day to help their children get ready for school and succeed in life. Start early with your children by participating in the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten challenge. Ask your local librarian to help you select some awesome books. You can also call Dial a Story to listen to a story on your phone or watch an animated book on Tumblebooks Library.

5. American Adventure Month is celebrated in August, but if you’ve had a busy summer, you may want to have an ā€œarmchair adventure.ā€ Didn’t get a chance to travel this summer? Visit your library to find a book and travel to a place you’ve always dreamed of, like Paris, London or Moscow. Have an adventure from the comfort of your home. If you want to read on the go, your library has many mobile reading options including Playaways, Talking Books and downloadable books on Libby and Palace Project!

On Saturday, Aug. 30, all libraries will be closed in observance of the Labor Day holiday. Seaside Branch and the Administrative Office will also be closed on Monday, Sept. 1, for Labor Day.
