KING CITY — Fort Hunter Liggett honored local Jolon resident Kathy Merritt for her support of the military through events and donations on March 8.

“Kathy has been a long-term supporter of the troops and Fort Hunter Liggett and we greatly appreciate all of her efforts,” Commander Jan. C. Norris said. “Her contributions have made a positive impact to soldiers’ and their dependents’ lives. It’s reassuring to know we have great Americans like Kathy in our local community.”

Merritt said that she was “fooled” into going to the Fort Hunter Liggett meeting by Sandy Lockwood, who told her she had to go because the Veterans of Foreign Wars were getting an award and they needed someone to accept it.

“I do what I do because I love service members that give so much for the nation,” Merritt said.

Merritt’s award was for her support during the Garrison’s breakfast with Santa Claus and the donation of the Thanksgiving baskets that are appreciated by the soldiers and their families.

“It was a very rewarding moment,” Merritt said. “It warmed my heart.”

Merritt started supporting the military when her brother, David Enns Jr., served in Vietnam and started supporting Fort Hunter Liggett about 17 years ago.

“Fort Hunter Liggett is a huge installation and provides a vital service for the nation as a training facility,” Merritt said. “They are marvelous.”
