SALINAS VALLEY — All four South Monterey County high school football teams will be on the playing fields this Friday, Aug. 22, for the start of the 2025-26 season.
Greenfield will travel to Salinas for the Rancho San Juan Jamboree; King City will head to Soledad for a pre-season scrimmage; and Gonzales has a pre-season scrimmage at Alisal.
King City head coach Mac Villanueva is returning to coach the Mustangs with an experienced group of players.
“We are looking to get a different look other than going against our own scout guys,” Villanueva said. “Try to get an idea of where we’re at in this stage of the season. The format will be a loose-based scrimmage format, basically some open field stuff, maybe some situational stuff on special teams. We’re still dialing in the format, but it’ll be what both teams need to kind of assess where we are at this point of the season.”
While Gonzales head coach Eddy Ramirez would rather be playing a regular game at this point, the Spartans will make the best of the Alisal scrimmage.
“Playing in a regular game with Alisal would have been better for both teams,” Ramirez said. “We’ll make the most of it and take a good look at our players in situations.”
Both junior varsity and varsity teams will play in Friday’s 5:30 p.m. scrimmages.
