KING CITY — So far this football season hasn’t been great for the two oldest teams in South Monterey County, the King City Mustangs and the Gonzales Spartans, as they both drop to 0-2.
In week two, King City had a difficult time with the Palma Chieftains and was shut out 42-0. However, some good news for the Mustangs is that this was probably the hardest game that they will face all season.
The Mustangs are winless as they head into week three, facing their longest rival in school history — the Spartans.
Speaking of which, Gonzales cautioned their team after being shut out the week before by Scotts Valley, which is a strong contender for the championship title. The Spartans had hoped to defeat Pacific Grove in their home opener.
Coming into the season, we knew Gonzales’ offense would be able to put up points, and that was the trend in this game, with two high-powered offenses going toe-to-toe with each other.
But the Spartans lost a close shootout to Pacific Grove, 36-34, and are currently 0-2.
This Friday night, the Mustangs and the Spartans will once again clash as the county’s longest rivalry will be renewed in Gonzales.
