MONTEREY COUNTY — Monterey County Free Libraries (MCFL) will take part in a statewide effort this month aimed at capturing how Californians use and value their local public libraries.
The initiative, called “Every Story Counts,” seeks data, stories and photos illustrating how and why residents rely on library services. From Jan. 25-31, MCFL will encourage patrons to share their personal experiences at library branches throughout the county, including South Monterey County.
Public libraries across California provide essential services, trusted information and community spaces, serving residents of all ages and backgrounds. The state has 188 library jurisdictions made up of 1,127 individual local libraries.
“The Monterey County Free Libraries staff work hard to provide our communities a wide range of programs and services, through our 16 branches, from Pajaro to Parkfield,” said Chris Ricker, assistant director. “We want to know more about not only how and why our communities use our libraries, but to hear from community members directly about their own library experiences.”
State library leaders say the effort will help highlight the broad impact of public libraries.
“We all know the value of public libraries and the strong return on investment they provide,” said Greg Lucas, California State Librarian. “‘Every Story Counts’ will help us create a more complete picture of the extraordinary range of activities that happen in libraries across the state.”
During the weeklong initiative, MCFL will document programs and services through photos and videos and invite patrons to contribute their own stories. Residents are encouraged to participate whether they are attending story time with a child, using library computers, checking out a Park Pass, asking staff for assistance or taking advantage of other library offerings.
Feedback may be submitted through an online survey at surveymonkey.com/r/C6B8MZV, available in English and Spanish, or in person at any branch location during the special week.
Library officials said the effort is part of an ongoing commitment to gather community input and improve programs and services.
Monterey County Free Libraries was established by the Monterey County Board of Supervisors on Aug. 6, 1912, under the authority of the County Library Law of 1911. The system includes 16 branches, three bookmobiles, a Book by Mail program and online resources.
