KING CITY ā Wonder Wood Ranch (WWR), a Monterey County-based nonprofit known for transforming lives through equine therapy, has announced its expansion to Valley View Ranch Equine Rescue in South Monterey County.
This bold move brings life-changing programming closer to the communities of Greenfield and King City ā areas deeply affected by youth violence and limited access to supportive services.
With a mission to serve at-risk and justice-involved youth, WWR is launching a new initiative that combines equine rescue, trauma-informed care and workforce development. The expansion will provide local youth with hands-on training in animal care, ranch management and emergency rescue operations ā skills that open doors to meaningful careers and brighter futures.
āSouth County youth deserve hope, healing and opportunity,ā said Marlo Schalesky, executive director of Wonder Wood Ranch. āBy expanding to Valley View, weāre not just rescuing horses ā weāre rescuing futures.ā
Key highlights of the expansion include:
- Local Access: A new site just 15 minutes from Greenfield and King City, reducing barriers to participation;
- Workforce Development: Youth will gain certifications in animal rescue and emergency response, preparing them for careers in high-demand fields;
- Safe Housing: Onsite accommodation for 1-4 youth in the advanced program; and
- Community Impact: A response to the urgent need for culturally responsive, pro-social youth interventions in one of Californiaās most underserved regions.
WWR is seeking $150,000 in funding to support start-up costs and the first year of operations. The organization has a proven track record of success, with partnerships across 70-plus agencies and a commitment to trauma-informed, evidence-based practices.
