KING CITY ā€” City of King and Waste Management Inc., the refuse and recycling collection operator, are proposing a special assessment process for delinquent accounts.

Waste Management has experienced a large number of unpaid accounts for its services in King City, according to City Manager Steve Adams.

ā€œDebt that is not collected after several attempts is passed on to other customers through higher rates,ā€ stated Adams in a news release. ā€œTherefore, this process is part of the Cityā€™s efforts to maintain rates as low as possible.ā€

Under the proposed process, debt that remains after several warnings will be placed on the property ownerā€™s property tax bill each year. Under the proposal, only debt incurred after July 1, 2024, would be subject to the assessment to provide time for landlords to modify their lease arrangements if desired.

No assessments would actually be levied until July 2025, according to Adams.

A public hearing was held by the King City Council at its Jan. 9 meeting to consider an ordinance that would establish the process.

Since the Council introduced the ordinance at that time, adoption will be considered at its Tuesday, Jan. 23, meeting in the Council Chambers at 6 p.m. The public is invited and encouraged to attend to share their input.
