SACRAMENTO — Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas is serving as acting governor of California on Wednesday while Gov. Gavin Newsom is out of the state.
Under the California Constitution, the speaker of the Assembly assumes the role of acting governor when the governor, lieutenant governor and president pro tempore of the state Senate are all absent from California.
Rivas, who represents Central Coast communities in the Salinas Valley and San Benito, Monterey, Santa Cruz and Santa Clara counties, is among the first Latinos to serve as acting governor of California.
The role is temporary and lasts only while the governor and the other constitutional officers ahead of the Assembly speaker in the line of succession are out of the state.
