SOUTH COUNTY — Two of the younger members of the King City and San Ardo Boxing Clubs traveled to Merced on Saturday to fight at the Mexican Independence Day Boxing Show that was hosted by the Haro Brothers Boxing Club.
Representing the King City Club at 60 pounds was Ivan Almanza, and representing the San Ardo Boxing Club at 53 pounds was Miguelito Hernandez.
“Ivan did pretty good and won by unanimous decision,” said Coach Rodolfo Tapia. “He did all of the things he needed to do to win the match. Miguelito fought against a kid that already had 16 fights while he has only fought six times. He host by unanimous decision but I felt the fight was closer that than. Both fighters received a lot of cheers and support from the crowd.”
After the fight the young boxer and their coach were able to spend a little time with former World Champion Robert “the Ghost” Guerrero of Gilroy who fought against some the best is now a boxing coach.
Guerrero was introduced to the audience and then spent time talking and taking photos with young fighters and the boxing fans in attendance.
On Saturday, Sept. 29, Hernandez and Almanza will travel with Tapia and Andy Hernandez (152 pounds) of the San Ardo Boxing Club, and Julio Martinez (115 pounds) of the King City Boxing Club to Visalia for another boxing show.
