
SALINAS VALLEY — King City High School girls’ basketball team is 4-2 in the pre-season with wins last week at Carmel and at home against Harbor.
On Dec. 9 at Carmel, the Lady Mustangs’ Alizah Carrillo and Katia Slama scored double-figures in the 56-41 victory over the Padres. Carrillo led King City with 15 points and Slama added 14 points. Crystal Paramo and Kim Rodriguez each had 10 rebounds in the win.
In the 57-25 win over Harbor on Saturday, Carrillo led the Lady Mustangs in scoring with 14 points and Paramo had a double-double with 13 points and 16 rebounds.
In games this week, King City played at Paso Robles on Monday and will travel to Castroville on Wednesday to battle the North Monterey County Condors.
Soledad girls bounced back after suffering their first loss of the season the previous week with a 44-25 win over Greenfield and a 46-29 win against host Carmel. The Lady Aztecs finished the week with a 54-44 setback at Notre Dame of San Jose on Saturday.
At Greenfield, the Lady Aztecs had balanced scoring as Jessica Morales, Delylah Ocampo and Aliyah Velarde each scored 11 points. In the Carmel game, Morales led Soledad with 15 points and Ocampo finished in double-figures with 10 points. Monique Trujillo had an impressive 15 rebounds.
In San Jose, Atiana Landeros led Soledad with 11 points and Morales added 10 points.
The Aztecs hosted the Seaside Spartans on Tuesday night and will host the North Monterey County Condors on Friday.
BOYS’ BASKETBALL
King City boys split games last week and are now 4-2 in the pre-season. The Mustangs lost 45-41 at Marina High School last Monday, and then bounced back with a 64-21 victory on the road Thursday to the Pajaro Valley Grizzlies.
Johell Carrillo continues to be one of the leading scorers in the tri-county region as he led the Mustangs with 23 points and completed the double-double with 17 rebounds against the Mariners.
Last Thursday, Carrillo had another double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds and added five assists to lead the Mustangs against the Grizzlies. Zavier Wilson matched Carrillo’s double-double with 16 points, 10 rebounds and finished ahead of his teammate with six assists. Ryan Barnett had 12 points, five rebounds and three steals.
“We are looking forward to this week as we play three games to finish our pre-season,” said King City head coach Jordan Ramirez. “We know as a team we just have to take it one game at a time, and we hope to build on the positive note of our 4-2 record.”
King City hosted York on Monday, traveled to Hollister for a game with the Haybalers on Tuesday, and will host Oakwood on Friday night.
Soledad fell to 2-2 overall after being beaten 75-43 last Tuesday at Pacific Grove. Pedro Morales led the Aztecs with 16 points and Ayden Urquidez had 10 points.
“We took the time this week to work on some things in practice that we think will help us going forward,” said Soledad head coach Nick Twitchell. “We have a young team capable of a lot of growth. Looking forward to facing San Lorenzo Valley on Tuesday.”
Gonzales High traveled to Modesto last week to play in the Central Catholic’s Mark Gallo Tournament. The Spartan boys finished the tournament with a 1-3 record.
After losing their first two games to Central Catholic and and Central Valley, the Spartans defeated Cesar Chavez High School by a 50-46 score. Fernando De Leon led Gonzales with 21 points.
In the last game of the tournament, the Spartans lost 71-69 to Ceres. Alex Hernandez led Gonzales in scoring with 17 points and Edgar Mendoza joined Hernandez in double figures with 14 points. Joshua Mariscal, Eduardo Barragon and De Leon combined for 26 points.
Gonzales (2-5) hosted Mt. Pleasant of San Jose on Tuesday night.
The Greenfield boys participated in the Watsonville Tournament last week. The Bruins lost in their first game to Hollister by a 72-40 score last Wednesday and then fell 61-54 to North Monterey County last Thursday.
The Bruins will host the Pajaro Valley Grizzlies on Wednesday night.
