Student awarded Rare Fruit Growers scholarship

KING CITY — The Central Coast Chapter of the California Rare Fruit Growers recently awarded a $500 scholarship to King City High School student Madison Owens.

Every spring the local chapter sends an Apple Grafting Team to King City High School, teaching about 100 agriculture students the art and science of grafting a fruit tree.

Afterward, scholarships are offered to high school seniors who were involved in the grafting program.

This year, Owens applied and was selected as one of the winners.

“Our scholarship committee is tough and has high standards for our scholarship,” said Joe Sabol, scholarship committee chair for the local chapter. “Madison quickly rose to the top of the stack.”

Owens plans to attend California State University, Chico, to study agriculture, with the hopes of becoming an agriculture teacher.
