For Dr. Ruth Pedraza, Family Medicine Service Director at Mee Memorial, practicing medicine is about building relationships with patients, walking alongside their families and making a difference in people’s lives. That commitment is what brought her to South Monterey County.
After three-and-a-half years serving the area, Pedraza’s experience reflects what rural healthcare is all about: trust, collaboration and deep local roots.
Her professional journey started long before medical school. Growing up in a small, rural town in Mexico, she learned early on what it means to work hard and believe in herself.
At nearly 17, when she moved to the United States with her family, she didn’t speak a word of English. This experience gave her firsthand knowledge of what it feels like to navigate a new culture, cope with language barriers and work through unfamiliar and complex systems. Today, that background makes all the difference in the exam room.
“Many of my family members live with the same chronic conditions that affect my patients,” Pedraza noted. “And so I recognize the challenges that families face. I strive to provide care with empathy, respect and understanding, because I know how important it is for patients to be heard and supported.”
During her time in South County, Pedraza has experienced one of the most rewarding aspects of a small-town practice: caring for multiple generations of the same family, from grandparents to great-grandchildren. That continuity means she really gets to know a family’s history, their values and the hurdles they face, which makes preventive care and everyday health education much more effective.
Pedraza is clear about the healthcare needs facing local families. Chronic conditions, such as high blood pressure, diabetes and heart disease, are common, and everyday stressors can make managing those illnesses even harder. To address this, Pedraza makes education a core part of every visit, breaking down medications, nutrition and recommended lifestyle changes into practical steps while also monitoring mental health and stress management.
“In my experience, South County residents have strong social connections, a deep sense of community and a strong appreciation for long-term relationships with their healthcare providers,” she said.
Pedraza also highlights the dedicated team of professionals at Mee Memorial who are committed to providing compassionate, personalized and comprehensive care.
“Patients can have confidence that they are receiving care from a skilled team that is invested in both their health and the well-being of the community,” Pedraza said.
Her overall message to the community is that residents don’t have to travel long distances to access quality medical care. Mee Memorial provides a range of healthcare services delivered by a caring team that views patients as neighbors, not just medical charts.
The future of rural healthcare lies with the next generation, and Pedraza wants young people in South County to believe that their dreams are possible.
“If someone who arrived in this country as a teen without speaking English can become a doctor, they can achieve their goals as well,” she said. “I hope my journey encourages young people to believe in themselves, work hard, and never let their circumstances define what they can accomplish.”
