KING CITY — King City High School flag football duo of quarterback Katia Slama and receiver Shyrah McDonald set some school records in passing and receiving last week in divisional games.
Slama exceeded 15,000 passing yards (15,165), while McDonald crossed the 4,000 mark in receiving yards (4,010) and 7,000 combined yards from scrimmage (7,083).
“They are both four-year varsity players, and to say that we will miss them a lot is an understatement,” said Mustang head coach Brent Slama. “They defined the first years of our program.”
Last week King City claimed two Mission Division wins, overwhelming Pacific Collegiate, 47-7, downing the Watsonville Wildcatz, 26-12, and winning a 20-19 thriller against Gabilan Division leading Alisal.
Stat leaders in the Pacific Collegiate game were: Katia Slama, 238 passing yards and seven passing touchdowns; Mayte Sarabia, three receptions and one interception; Melissa Iglesias, two receptions and one touchdown; Heidi Medina, one reception and one touchdown; Yamilet Rivas, one reception and one touchdown; and Sofia Perez had one interception.
Against Watsonville, Katia Slama threw for 164 yards with two passing touchdowns and 54 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns; Medina had five receptions for 69 yards with two touchdowns and one interception; McDonald had three sacks; and Sarabia had seven flag pulls.
In the battle with Alisal, Katia Slama had 314 passing yards and threw three touchdowns; Iglesias scored a touchdown and had an interception; Sarabia had eight receptions for 149 yards and two touchdowns and ran for the 70-yard, game-tying touchdown with under two minutes to play; Medina added five receptions for 70 yards and scored the game-winning extra point and closed out the game with an interception.
King City is 9-5 overall and 5-1 in the Mission Division with games this week against Soledad on Tuesday before hosting Marina on Thursday and completing the busy week by hosting Aptos on Saturday in a non-divisional game.
