Greenfield sets free cleanup, recycling day
GREENFIELD — Greenfield residents will have an opportunity to dispose of unwanted household items for free during the city’s Reuse, Recycle & Cleanup Day on Saturday, Aug. 29.
The event will be held from 8 a.m. to noon, or until boxes are full, at the Greenfield Corp. Yard, 920 Walnut Ave.
Items accepted include general garbage, electronics, televisions, computers, metal appliances and metal and steel items, including refrigerators and freezers. Residents also may bring used oil filters for recycling and receive up to two free replacement oil filters.
The event is open to City of Greenfield residents only. Furniture and yard waste will not be accepted.

Overnight ramp closures planned along highways
MONTEREY COUNTY — Caltrans will begin overnight pavement preservation work Sunday, Aug. 30, resulting in ramp and intermittent lane closures along Highway 101 and Highway 1 in Monterey County.
Work will take place from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. and is expected to continue through Sept. 4. Drivers should expect delays of 10 to 15 minutes.
Closures will affect ramps in Greenfield, Soledad, Salinas and Monterey, including:
- Greenfield: Oak Avenue, Walnut Avenue and Livingston Road/El Camino Real.
- Soledad: Arroyo Seco Road and north- and southbound ramps to State Route 146.
- Salinas: Northbound ramps to Abbott Street and Roy Diaz Street/De La Torre; north- and southbound ramps to Kern Street/Market Street and N. Main Street/State Route 183; and southbound ramps to Airport Boulevard and Sanborn Avenue.
- Monterey: Northbound Highway 1 to N. Fremont Street; north- and southbound Highway 1 to the State Route 68 east connector; and State Route 68 to N. Fremont Street.
The work is intended to extend pavement life by improving skid resistance, restricting moisture and restoring a uniform surface with pavement delineation. The contractor is CalRise Builder Inc. of La Verne.
Electronic message signs will alert motorists to upcoming work and closures. Drivers are asked to use caution, watch for flaggers and highway workers, and allow additional travel time.
VNA receives $25K grant to support clinical workforce
MONTEREY COUNTY — Central Coast VNA & Hospice has received a $25,000 grant from the Community Foundation for Monterey County to strengthen its clinical workforce through advanced training, hands-on education and professional development.
The grant, provided through the Lauralie and J. Irvine Fund and the Rapa Trust Fund, will support evidence-based training, annual clinical skills education in partnership with Hartnell College, and continued support for a clinical educator who mentors nurses and therapists providing care in patients’ homes.
VNA clinicians often work independently while making critical health care decisions in home settings. The organization said the funding will help ensure staff have the training and resources needed to provide safe, high-quality care to more than 4,000 Monterey County residents each year.
The grant comes as Central Coast VNA & Hospice celebrates 75 years of serving the community. The organization provides skilled home-based care throughout Monterey County.
Natividad earns ‘A’ hospital safety grade
SALINAS — Natividad Medical Center has earned an “A” Hospital Safety Grade for spring 2026 from The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit focused on patient safety.
The Leapfrog Group assigns safety grades from “A” to “F” to general hospitals nationwide based on measures focused on preventable medical errors, accidents, injuries and infections.
