BRADLEY — The body of a missing person was recovered Monday from Lake San Antonio after an underwater search by Monterey County sheriff’s deputies and park rangers.
At about 3:10 p.m. on Sunday, park rangers received a report of an adult who had gone missing near the South Shore area of the lake near Beach Road.
A family member told rangers the person had not been seen for about 20 minutes and was last observed in the water near the shoreline. Family members also reported the person was an inexperienced swimmer.
Park rangers immediately began searching the shoreline and surrounding area. Based on information provided by witnesses and the circumstances of the incident, authorities believed the person may have gone underwater and not resurfaced.
The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team responded to assist with the search. Divers searched the area where the person was last seen and surrounding waters but were unable to locate the individual before operations were suspended Sunday.
The dive team and park rangers resumed the search Monday, transitioning the effort to a recovery operation. Crews used multiple search techniques, including sonar, to search the area.
After several hours, the missing person was located deceased in the water.
The Sheriff’s Office Coroner Unit responded and took custody of the body. The identity of the person is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
“The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office extends its condolences to the family and loved ones of the decedent,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a press release Aug. 10.
