SOLEDAD — Eight custody staff members at Salinas Valley State Prison in Soledad were treated at a medical facility after falling ill Friday afternoon in the prison’s Facility C visiting area, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
At about 4:41 p.m. on July 17, the Monterey County Hazardous Materials Team responded to the prison after several staff members became ill. Eight custody staff members were transported to an outside medical facility, where they were treated and released, CDCR said.
All visitors in the affected area were medically evaluated and released.
Cal Fire BEU resources assisted Correctional Training Facility Fire with the hazardous materials response, providing mutual aid support to the lead agency.
The HAZMAT team conducted environmental testing of the area, with results showing no dangerous or hazardous substances were detected. The impacted areas will undergo a professional and thorough cleaning, according to CDCR.
The prison’s Investigative Services Unit is continuing to investigate the source of the incident.
