National Agriculture Week 2026 will be observed March 15-21, with National Ag Day falling on March 24. The annual week highlights the vital role agriculture plays in the United States — providing food, jobs and economic stability — and encourages Americans to recognize the industry’s contributions to daily life and the economy.
A Local Industry with Global Impact
Monterey County and the Salinas Valley are at the center of California’s agricultural success. Known as the “Salad Bowl of the World,” the region produces a wide variety of vegetables, leafy greens, berries and other high-value crops shipped across the nation and internationally.
According to recent data, Monterey County’s agricultural industry contributed nearly $11.7 billion to the local economy and supported tens of thousands of jobs, making it by far the county’s largest economic sector.
During National Agriculture Week, growers and organizations encourage the public to learn about how food is produced, the challenges the industry faces and opportunities for careers in sustainable farming, agricultural science and technology.
Inspiring the Next Generation
Youth engagement is a major focus during National Agriculture Week. Programs like Farm Day bring thousands of Monterey County students to hands-on learning experiences about food production, illustrating how farms operate and how produce reaches consumers.
FFA chapters and other youth organizations also participate in community service and advocacy efforts, highlighting career pathways in agriculture — from science and technology to business and environmental stewardship.
Ways to Participate
Residents can take part in National Agriculture Week by visiting local farms or farmers markets, attending community events, sharing stories and photos online and learning about the people behind local agriculture. The week encourages recognition of the dedication, innovation and hard work that sustain the region’s farms and the nation’s food supply.
