KING CITY — This year, King City High School hosted its first Mustang 101 event, welcoming eighth graders from Chalone Peaks, San Lucas, San Ardo and Bitterwater to experience what life as a Mustang is all about.
Last week’s event gave future students the opportunity to explore the campus, meet current students and learn about the many academic, extracurricular and social opportunities available to them as they prepare for their transition into high school.
With the guidance of Assistant Principal Tori Loney, ASB Leadership and Link Crew hosted the event and played a major role in creating a fun, exciting and welcoming atmosphere. The campus was decorated with colorful posters to help make students feel at ease. Their efforts helped cultivate an environment that encouraged the incoming students to feel excited and confident about their future high school years.
As the eighth graders arrived on campus, many came in feeling a bit nervous about what high school might be like. However, those nerves were quickly balanced by curiosity and excitement. Throughout the event, students asked thoughtful questions and eagerly explored all that the school has to offer.
One of the standout attractions was the school farm and agricultural building, where students learned about hands-on ag education from floral to mechanics to livestock. These classes showed visitors how learning can extend beyond the classroom and into real-world experiences.
Students were also introduced to the wide variety of elective classes available. They learned that they can choose from creative courses, such as art, drama, band and guitar, along with other electives that align closely with potential future career paths, like the HOSA medical pathway. These options helped students see how high school can be personalized to match their interests and goals.
In addition, several clubs and sports teams set up informational booths to spark interest and encourage engagement. Clubs such as FFA, Drama and Interact were available to answer questions and share how students can get involved and make meaningful connections. Athletic programs including swim, cross country, volleyball and football also participated, showing students the wide range of opportunities to stay active and involved on campus.
Overall, Mustang 101 was a huge success, especially as the school’s first time hosting the event. While many students arrived feeling unsure and nervous, they left feeling more confident, informed and prepared to take on high school.
Mustang 101 helped turn uncertainty into excitement and gave future Mustangs a strong start as they look ahead to their high school journey.
