SALINAS VALLEY — King City High’s girls basketball team is in second place in the Cypress Division with a 5-2 division mark (10-7 overall).
The Lady Mustangs had two games last week, losing by a 49-39 score to Pacific Collegiate and coming back with a 40-19 victory against the Marina Mariners.
King City’s Katia Slama, Crystal Paramo and Kendyl Burpo scored 10 points apiece against Pacific Collegiate. Paramo had a double-double with 15 points and 17 rebounds in the win over Marina, and Alizah Carrillo added nine points.
Soledad split their contests last week, losing 43-30 to the Watsonville Wildcatz and beating the Monterey Toreadors, 41-33.
In the Watsonville game, Xochitl Orozco and Monique Trujillo led Soledad with seven points apiece. Jessica Morales and Aliyah Velarde scored six points apiece.
Two nights later against the Toreadores, Delylah Ocampo led the Aztecs in scoring with 18 points, while Morales scored eight points. Velarde added eight points and 10 rebounds.
Gonzales won its first game of the season last week, downing the Seaside Spartans, 50-11.
Priscilla Hurtado scored 14 points, including three 3-point baskets, for Gonzales. Camilla Ramirez contributed six points and eight rebounds, while Maryanne Camarena finished with eight steals and five deflections.
Last Thursday, Gonzales lost by a 51-24 tally to Pacific Collegiate. Hurtado led the team in scoring with 12 points, including four 3-point baskets. Valerie Amador added points and Camarena provided another strong defensive effort.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Soledad High’s boys basketball team is leading the Cypress Division with a 6-1 record, with the Gonzales Spartans right behind them in second place with a 5-2 record. Both teams played each other Wednesday night at the Roger Fernando Gym in Gonzales, the results of which were not available at press deadline.
The Aztecs (10-7 overall) won two Cypress Division games last week, defeating the North Salinas Vikings, 50-34, and the King City Mustangs by a 48-38 score.
In the game with the Vikings, Pedro Morales had a double-double with 22 points and 12 rebounds and five assists for Soledad. Calvin DeShazo also had a double-double with 11 points, 12 rebounds and three assists.
In the King City game, Pedro Morales led the Aztecs with 16 points, four rebounds and three assists. DeShazo added eight points and 11 rebounds. Jeronimo Morales contributed with 11 points and Ayden Urquidez scored nine points.
Gonzales (9-8 overall) beat the Seaside Spartans, 58-51, last week and were led in scoring by Fernando Leon with 21 points and Eduardo Barragon with 18 points.
The Gonzales Spartans finished the week with a 54-45 victory over Pacific Collegiate. Alex Hernandez and DeLeon scored 15 points apiece and Jaden Uribe added nine points.
The King City boys are in fifth place in the Cypress Division with a 4-3 record and are 9-7 overall.
Last Tuesday, the Mustangs defeated Pacific Collegiate in Santa Cruz, 57-37. Johell Carrillo led King City in scoring with 21 points. Fernando Camacho added 13 points and Ryan Barnett scored 11 points.
Greenfield played .500 ball last week in the Cypress Division, falling 101-69 at Monte Vista Christian and winning at home over Seaside, 75-64.
Against MVC, Omar Flores had 26 points and Johnny Miranda had 20 points and 13 rebounds. Kenny Pajas contributed with seven points and four assists.
In the home game with Seaside, Flores scored 24 points and completed the double-double with 15 rebounds. Miranda finished with 16 points, six rebounds and added four steals.
Guillermo Martinez added nine points, 12 rebounds, four steals and four assists. Azael Martinez had nine points, four assists and four steals.
