VETERAN BANNERS

SOLEDAD — Thanks to the support of Monterey County Supervisor Chris Lopez, Soledad veterans can now register free of charge for this year’s Veteran Banner Program, which honors local heroes. Veterans who are residents of Soledad are encouraged to submit a registration form to have a banner displayed along downtown Front Street during Veterans Week. The registration deadline is Oct. 16. ALZHEIMER’S WALK

MONTEREY — The Alzheimer’s Association Monterey Walk to End Alzheimer’s will be held Saturday, Oct. 18, at Custom House Plaza in Monterey. Registration begins at 8 a.m., with a ceremony at 9 a.m. and the walk starting at 9:30 a.m. The event is the world’s largest fundraiser for Alzheimer’s care, support and research. Although registration is free, participants are encouraged to fundraise for the cause. The walk, held annually in over 600 communities nationwide, aims to unite people of all ages in the fight against Alzheimer’s. Sign up online at alz.org/montereywalk.


CLEANUP DAY

GONZALES — City of Gonzales and other organizations have planned a Reuse, Recycle and Cleanup Day on Saturday, Oct. 18, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. (or until boxes are full) at Fairview Middle School, 401 Fourth St. Gonzales residents can dispose of such items as general garbage, electronics, TVs, computers, metal appliances and metal and steel items, including refrigerators and freezers, for free. No furniture or yard waste will be accepted. In addition, there will be a special materials collection for antifreeze, batteries, oil and paint. There will also be a free compost giveaway at the cleanup event. Residents can bring a shovel, bags and containers to take some home for their garden. BONUS BRIEF: COLLECTION DRIVE

KING CITY — Community Food Pantry of King City is reminding residents that the Goodwill collection drive will take place this Saturday, Oct. 18, and Sunday, Oct. 19, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Broadway parking lot at King City High School. South Monterey County residents can bring new or gently used, still useable items to the Goodwill donation trailer. For every trailer filled, Goodwill will donate $1,000 to the Food Pantry to support its food distribution program for King City residents in need. No furniture, mattresses, beds, large appliances, exercise equipment, baby strollers or car seats will be accepted at the trailer. For more information, call Peggy at 831-320-8678.
