HSI WEEK
SALINAS — Hartnell College will celebrate Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) Week, Sept. 9-12, with a series of free events open to the public. The week will include featured presentations by award-winning author Francisco Jiménez and the social media duo FoosInMedicine. On Wednesday, Sept. 10, the Main Stage will showcase a short film on the life of Jiménez, whose award-winning books — including “Cajas de Cartón,” “The Circuit” and “Breaking Through” — chronicle his journey from farmworker to celebrated writer and professor. Screenings at 1 and 3 p.m. will be followed by panel discussions and a book signing. On Friday, Sept. 12, UCLA medical students Irvin and Alexis, known as FoosInMedicine, will lead a community conversation at noon on the Main Stage and a Q&A session at 2:30 p.m. in Building K 125, both on the main campus. The pair has captivated millions on social media by blending humor with healthcare advocacy, and will share stories of resilience, representation and breaking barriers through their journey in becoming doctors. “HSI Week is about honoring culture, uplifting voices and connecting education with real-world impact,” said Laura Zavala, director of Hispanic Serving Institution Initiatives at Hartnell College. “We are proud to open our doors to the community for this exciting week of celebration.” All HSI Week events are free and open to the public. Seating is limited, and registration is encouraged. For a full schedule of HSI Week events, visit hartnell.edu/about/hsi/index.html.
