KING CITY — King City’s plan to convert the former Days Inn property into a permanent supportive housing facility is officially moving forward, after it secured an additional $16 million in grants to fully fund the project.

According to the City of King on Thursday, the City is now in escrow to purchase the property using entirely grant funds. Once the purchase is complete, the site will be transferred to the Housing Authority of the County of Monterey, which will oversee construction and operation of the facility.

As part of the project’s progress, King City has executed a settlement agreement with the California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD), becoming the first of several jurisdictions to be released from an HCD lawsuit involving the loss of foreclosed properties by the same developer. The City filed its own lawsuit against the developer shortly afterward.

City officials stated that the facility “will address a large portion of the city’s homelessness by providing both housing and supportive services.”

The City also thanked its partner agencies for helping to make the project possible, including the County of Monterey, Housing Authority of the County of Monterey, Central California Alliance for Health, Coalition of Homeless Services Providers, Step Up on Second Street and others.
