Football | King City beats Soledad in season finale

KING CITY — Going into their final game of the season, both the King City Mustangs and the Soledad Aztecs were looking to end the year on a high note.

Although both the Mustangs and the Aztecs are not going to the postseason, ending the season with a win against a rival is extremely important for bragging rights, and for the Aztecs they didn’t want to go winless against the South Monterey County teams.

This year the Mustangs are 1-1 with a win over Gonzales and a loss to Greenfield, while the Aztecs are 0-2 with losses to Greenfield and Gonzales.

King City got off with a bag when they handed it to their star freshman Carson Tidwell, who broke an 81-yard run to get the Mustangs on board first. Since Tidwell joined the Mustangs, he has been their main go-to guy on the offense, rushing for 730 yards with four touchdowns.

This year Tidwell has rushed for over 100 yards four times.

It didn’t take long for the Aztecs to respond back, as they were able to take the lead at the end of the first quarter, 12-7.

The interesting twist is that Soledad senior quarterback Ivan Salcido threw a touchdown and rushed for a touchdown. Salcido started his high school career at King City and is now trying to end his high school football career against his former school.

Salcido found wide receiver Victor Runano in the second quarter for his fifth touchdown of the season.

In the second quarter, the Mustangs and the Aztecs would have two lead changes. But it was the Mustangs who would take the lead going into halftime.

King City’s Junior Manriquez showed how far along he came when he found wide receiver Adrian Garcia for 50 yards to take a 21-18 lead.

In the second half, the Mustangs defense would pitch a shutout as they would go to beat the Aztecs, 33-18.

King City finished the season with a 4-6 overall record, while the Aztecs ended with 2-8.
