GARDENING WEBINARS

SALINAS VALLEY — Residents can join the Salinas Valley Basin Groundwater Sustainability Agency for free Zoom webinars hosted by California American Water, Monterey Peninsula Water Management District and the Water Awareness Committee this fall. The next online program will focus on “Rainwater Capture” on Thursday, Oct. 12, from 6 to 7:15 p.m. Two additional workshops will be offered later in the fall: “Graywater Basics” on Thursday, Oct. 26, from 6 to 7:15 p.m. and “Landscape Transformation on a Budget” on Thursday, Nov. 2, from 6 to 7 p.m. These classes for professional and home/property owners provide training and education for transforming water and resource-guzzling gardens into beautiful climate-friendly landscapes. DROP-OFF EVENT

KING CITY — A King City Community Drop-Off Event will take place Saturday, Oct. 14, from 8 to 10:30 a.m. at the Salinas Valley Fairgrounds, 625 Division St. Accepted items include mattresses, appliances, yard waste, electronics, metals, furniture and tires (limit two per vehicle). Neither commercial dumping nor trash will be accepted. There will also be an expanded household hazardous waste collection by appointment only (call 916-229-6503 or email jd*******@ha****.com ). COLLEGE & CAREER FAIR

GONZALES — Gonzales Unified School District will host the second annual College and Career Fair on Saturday, Oct. 14, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Gonzales High School, 501 Fifth St., in Gonzales. There will be representatives from four-year universities, community colleges, technical schools, skilled trades, military, first responders, law enforcement, career exploration, financial aid and scholarships. Students of all ages, parents and community members are welcome to attend.

BONUS BRIEF: FIRE OPEN HOUSE

GREENFIELD — Greenfield Fire Department’s Open House will take place Saturday, Oct. 14, during Fire Prevention Week. There will be live demonstrations as well as a free hot dog barbecue (while supplies last) from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 380 Oak Ave. in Greenfield. Stop by to meet Greenfield firefighters, tour the fire station and fire engines and meet some of their local partners.
