SAN LUCAS — Highway 198 in Monterey County fully reopened at 8 a.m. on Friday, June 2, after repairs were completed to a washout of the roadway caused by damage from winter storms.
Crews working on Highway 198, 20.2 miles east of Highway 101, excavated a section of the roadway, added fill to bring it up to grade, and completed paving of the roadway this week, ahead of the reopening.
Repairs were also completed to a damaged section of Highway 198 in Fresno County last week. Once Highway 198 in Monterey is reopened on June 2, travelers will again be able to travel directly from San Lucas to Coalinga.
According to Caltrans, a section of Highway 198, at 20.8 miles east of Highway 101, is currently under monitoring and “will likely need to be repaired at some point in the future.”
Caltrans Geotech teams have deployed sensors to track the location and depth of slide activity to acquire information, which would guide the design of a future repair. The results of this monitoring might not be known for several weeks or months, Caltrans said.
