KING CITY — After four straight losses, the King City Mustangs boys’ basketball team have won three of their last four games, including an upset against Marina.
So far, this season hasn’t been going as expected for the Mustangs, but as of late they have started to rattle off a couple of wins.
After a 50-point loss to the Rancho San Juan Trailblazers on Jan. 18, King City won two straight games against their South Monterey County rivals, the Greenfield Bruins, 48-45, on Jan. 20, and the Gonzales Spartans, 66-57, on Jan. 23.
This past week was tough for the Mustangs, as they had to face two of the top teams in the Cypress Division, the defending champions Watsonville Wildcats and the Marina Mariners.
Coming into their Jan. 25 matchup, Watsonville was 6-0 and is looking to lock up the Cypress Division for the second straight year. The Mustangs were able to make them sweat it out all the way until the end, but they ultimately came up short, 60-57.
Mustang players Raul Garcia and Jjey Martinez each had 15 points in the loss.
In the last game of the week, King City faced off with Marina for the second time this year.
In the first matchup on Jan. 3, the Mustangs came up short, 52-56. In their second matchup on Jan. 27, the Mustangs had one of their best games of the year as they blew out the Mariners, 63-42.
Leading the way for King City was Martinez, who scored a team-high 18 points, and Garcia was able to score 17 points.
With the Mustangs winning three of their last four, they are now 3-5 in the Cypress Division.
The likelihood of the Mustangs making the playoffs is very slim, but they can make it hard for some of the teams that are trying to win the division.
King City played at North Salinas High School on Wednesday, beating them 55-52, and will next host Gonzales on Thursday.
