KING CITY — With all sports wrapped up at King City High School, the only thing left was to announce the male and female athletes of the year for the 2021-22 season who will live on in the history books.
Brooks Hearne won Male Athlete of the Year. Hearne was part of a great football run that saw the Mustangs just miss the playoffs, and during the winter he made a run through the CCS wrestling tournament.
During his senior year on the football field, he was second on the team in receptions and revising touchdowns. He also received the Mustang award.
For the wrestling season, Hearne was part of a team that was young and didn’t have a lot of wrestling experience. But that didn’t stop him from helping his team improve each week. He made it to the second day of the CCS tournament and finished with a 15th ranking in the 152-weight class.
Gisela Contreras won Female Athlete of the Year. Contreras, who is a three-sport athlete, has been part of the development stages. During her senior year, all three of her teams made the playoffs and she was a part of a team that won a title.
In the fall season, she helped the Lady Mustangs volleyball team achieve a 9-7 record and a playoff berth. She was second on the team in kills, digs and aces.
Coming into this basketball season, with the help of a senior-led team, the Lady Mustangs won 10 league games and finished in second. Contreras led the team in points scored and was voted to the All-League team.
The final sport Contreras played was softball. She played catcher and helped lead the Lady Mustangs to a share of the Cypress Division title. The team also hosted a playoff game for the first time.
