KING CITY — King City Police have arrested two local teenagers for making school violence threats that were shared over social media.
On Dec. 12, at about 6:30 p.m., the principal of King City High School contacted local officers regarding information he received about a suspected threat of school violence. According to King City Police, the threat had been spread through the social media platform Snapchat.
“King City Police Department immediately began an extensive investigation into the suspected threats, interviewing multiple juveniles, their parents, as well as high school staff, and were able to identify two individuals suspected of disseminating the threat via social media,” police said in a news release.
The investigation led to the arrest of two 15-year-old students, a boy and a girl, who were booked into the Monterey County Juvenile Hall on criminal threat charges. Their names were not released due to both being underage.
Officers are continuing to conduct interviews and serve search warrants to collect additional evidence from social media platforms. Police said there is no further threat related to this incident at this time.
“King City Police Department takes any threat to the safety of children, schools or our community as a threat to the safety of our community and will deploy all available resources when this occurs,” police said. “We want to thank the students and staff who reacted so quickly to bring this suspected threat to our attention.”
