SALINAS VALLEY — Gonzales High girls softball team won three straight games last week to improve to 4-1 overall and 5-2 in league.
The Lady Spartans split the season series with Soledad High, beating the Lady Aztecs 8-3, downed the Trinity Warriors 8-2, and finished the week with a 16-3 victory over the Greenfield Lady Bruins.
On May 12 against Soledad, Alex Guerrero went the distance and struck out nine in claiming the pitching win. Leah Salas went 3 x 4, Aryssa Sandoval was 3 x 4, and Bry Perez went 3 x 3. Diamond Contawe scored all three Lady Aztec runs.
The following day Guerrero pitched another gem, striking out 11 against the Warriors. Yanira Ruacho was perfect, going 3 x 3, while Salas and Celeste Camarena were 2 x 4 at the plate. Outstanding defense was played by Alena Fierro and Leah Salas. Celeste Camarena and Salas were 2 x 4 at the plate.
“The team is improving after every game,” said Greenfield head coach Adrian Trujillo. “The team came together a week before the season started, so at this point in the season, I am happy with the progress my young team is making.”
On Thursday, Guerrero had nine strikeouts in the win over the Lady Bruins and was 2 x 3 at the plate. Camarena was 3 x 4 with two homeruns and five RBIs. Linda Ornelas went 2 x 3 for Greenfield and Denise Solis added a couple of hits.
King City Lady Mustangs won two games last week, beating Greenfield 7-1 on May 11 and closing out the week with a 12-3 victory over the Soledad Lady Aztecs. Both games were home games for King City.
Malaya Carrillo was the winning pitcher for King City and allowed just one run on four hits. Carrillo, Breanna Owens and Skila Reyes all had multiple hits in the Greenfield game.
In the win over Soledad, the Lady Mustangs kept a winning streak alive with a total of 13 hits against the Aztecs. Gisela Contreras and Owens each went 3 x 3 and Lisa Villanueva also had three hits, including a two-run homer.
“Sage Flores had a great defensive game,” said King City head coach Julie Hood. “I am so proud of the way these girls are playing ball. It’s such a pleasure to coach these girls and to have such a great coaching staff like I do. I couldn’t do it without them.”
For Soledad, Contawe went 2 x 3 and an RBI and Lailah Sanchez-Vega had two RBIs.
In games played Tuesday, Greenfield hosted Gonzales and King City played at Soledad. On Thursday, Soledad hosted Carmel; King City hosted Robert Louis Stevenson; Gonzales played at Pacific Grove and Greenfield had a bye.
