To the Editor:
I’d like to thank Estrella Cruz for her March 17 Letter to the Editor (“Biden’s Immigration Bill”). She explained provisions of the U.S. Citizenship Act of 2021 that can potentially shift the focus of the immigration “debate” away from emotionally charged rhetoric to concrete actions to solve the root causes of pressure on borders everywhere.
I believe with her that acknowledging the contributions of currently undocumented individuals and families rather than blaming them for problems they neither created nor control is the path to a better future for all of us.
Immigrants have fueled the economic prosperity of this nation since its inception, and in fact the country’s founders were primarily immigrants whose treatment of those entitled by birth to be here was shameful.
Let’s look beyond stereotyping and blaming behavior to seek solutions through the legislative process that is the mark of a healthy democracy.
Let’s demand that our elected officials break the stalemate created by artificially imposed barriers like the filibuster, which has no basis in the constitution or any other understanding of good governance.
That will happen when an informed citizenry works together for the common good. Sharing information in public space such as treasured newspapers that belong to us all is a step in the right direction. I applaud those like Estrella, who come forward to share facts, and the Rustler and Tribune for giving us this forum.
