JOLON — Lines will be cast and spirits high as Fort Hunter Liggett prepares to host its 23rd Annual Youth Fishing Derby, a beloved community event that celebrates military children and the great outdoors.

Taking place Saturday, April 26, from 6:30 a.m. to noon at the Del Venturi Pond, the derby promises a morning full of excitement, learning and family bonding.

Part of the Month of the Military Child festivities, the Youth Fishing Derby invites children ages 15 and under to participate in a friendly fishing competition, completely free of charge. No special permits are needed for young anglers, making it easy for kids of all experience levels to join in on the fun.

Participants will compete for prizes awarded in several age groups, with accolades going to those who haul in the largest catches. But beyond the competition, the event offers a chance for military and local families to come together and enjoy a morning of connection, nature and community spirit.

After the derby concludes, Del Venturi Pond will remain open for public fishing. While children may continue without permits, adults will need a valid California fishing license to join in.

The event is made possible by Fort Hunter Liggett’s Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation (FMWR) program, along with a dedicated team of volunteers and generous sponsors. Supporters include A&G Plumbing, Azcona Harvesting, Boingo, IHG Hotels, L.A. Hearne Company, McDonald’s, Trout Unlimited and USAA.

Event organizers will provide signage along local roads to help guide families to the fishing site.
