I feel like this election cycle has been going on for years. Did you vote? Some of you are happy and some of you are not. But remember that’s what this country is all about, in four years you will have another chance. I have studied the results of the latest series of elections and would like to say a few things about what happened. I realize that some folks might take what I have to say the wrong way, but it is the way I think.
My bride stayed up with me for the results to come in as we were hoping that our favorite politicians would win some of the contests. Lo and behold we were rewarded with not only our choice for President, but also the Senate. As of the writing of this column, the House is still up for grabs.
Of course, we can’t always get what we want, so some of our hopes were shattered. That lying Adam Shift fooled enough folks to get elected. That was quite a blow to me. I had hoped that he would be sent home to teach his kids not to grow up like him. On the bright side, he will not have the majority.
The evening was not wasted as we watched our President get not only the Electoral College but the Popular Vote too. There are those who do not feel as I do that Trump will make good on the promises he has made. Time will tell, but I am old enough to have lived through his last administration when I could afford gas and to take my bride to dinner occasionally.
I’m pretty sure there were a lot of people that feel the way I do, as there were at least three parties that I was invited to in celebration of the election. Jim Muscio said that he told the guys he has coffee with every day that if Trump were to win, he would throw a party at his shop for all his friends. He must have a lot of friends because Lorraine and I were driving down Alta Major on our way to Salinas and it looked like everyone in Gonzales was there.
When we got back after about two hours in Salinas, they were still serving food and soda pop. Great party, Jim! A funny thing was what he said when I asked him how he was feeling. He looked at me with a big old smile on his face and he said, “I feel good, I woke up this morning feeling good, and I still feel that way.” I was taken aback a little and told him that those words were exactly what Lorraine and I said when the television announcer said, “Trump is our 47th President.” I know, I know… some of you are feeling the opposite. Time will tell.
OK, no more on the election. It’s just that I can still remember when I didn’t have to borrow money to buy gas. I hope that our new President will do all that he has said he would. As I am writing this, the TV is on in the other room. I can’t hear everything that is being said, but I did hear that President Trump will get rid of this “Lawfare” stuff. We have spent the past couple of years wasting time and money. Where did it get us? Right back to Trump. A sitting President in my opinion should not be arrested while serving.
We will have to wait to see where our future takes us. But I have faith in our new president and his administration to get to the bottom of what happened during the Covid period. Where did all that money go? What happened to our small businesses, our schools, our older folks? I could go on and on but you get the picture. I’m hopeful it will go a long way in allowing us to believe in our officials again.
How long will it take to bring our children’s academic ability to where they should be? We have a new chance to throw off the shackles that were prescribed by unscrupulous teachers or medical officials that were acting for money and not our children’s health or future. I’m optimistic enough to hope that this fiasco will not follow us for years to come. It would make me feel a lot better if a couple of those scoundrels were to be arrested and pay for their misdeeds.
I will stop on the bad parts for now. There is enough for many more if I wanted to continue. But I thought that since Monday was Veterans Day, I wanted to tell you about some wonderful events that have happened in our “Small Town with the Big Heart.”
Fairview Middle School ASB, with a little help from Mrs. Isuara Garcia and Joni Madolora, put on an incredible assembly honoring our veterans. I was as proud as I could be to see our kids shine on that day. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house. Thank you to all who participated and know that this veteran truly appreciated what you did.
Also, prior to the assembly, the City of Gonzales in collaboration with the American Legion Post 81 and the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 81 put together a “Hometown Heroes” event, which provided signs to honor our Gonzales veterans. If you have a moment, perhaps you could walk by Gonzales Central Park and see the signs of Veterans that live here or have served and are no longer with us. These are furnished by the veterans or their families, and they are prominently displayed as a reminder of all that have served. They will be on display until the end of November to make sure you have a chance to stop by and take a look.
