KING CITY — King City residents celebrated Earth Day by planting flowers and collecting items for disposable by Waste Management on April 22.
Phoebe Cheney, Laurie and Damien Slaten and Wes Beebee as part of the King City In Bloom group planted flowers at the corner of San Antonio and Broadway just before the Northbound onramp.
“This has been a five way collaboration with CalTrans, Cal Parks, the City of King, MCARLM (Monterey County Agriculture and Rural Life Museum), and King City in Bloom,” Cheney said.
CalTrans aided the effort by mowing the onramp and taking out brush. Cal Parks prepared the soil and mowed the area in front on the stone planter.
The City of King gave King City In Bloom the option to keep the tree behind the San Lorenzo Campground and Park sign, which has been re-designated as the City Christmas tree.
MCARLM helped with the flowers and plants and King City in Bloom put the flowers in the ground.
“We thought this was one of the most looked at corners, everybody coming in and out,” Cheney said.
“This is for them.”
A little bit further down the road at the King City High School parking lot on Mildred Avenue Waste Management and Salinas Valley Recycles were stationed.
The two organizations were collecting various items from yard waste, e-waste, fire wood, old appliances and even old oil.
King City residents or locals had the chance to bring their used tires, metals, washers, dryers, old TVs, branches from their yard and more to more than 10 dumpsters provided by Waste Management.
