KING CITY — King City Lady Mustangs had a busy week with home games against the Robert Louis Stevenson Pirates and the Pacific Grove Breakers. King City defeated the Pirates by a 3-0 score, and lost 3-1 to the Breakers.

“We had another good week,” said King City head coach Christine Domingos. “At the Stevenson game, we celebrated with a staff appreciation night.”

Hollyn Hearne and Amity Hearne combined for 17 kills, 16 digs and six aces in the contest. Hayden Munoz and Jordan Davis combined for four kills and six blocks. Neida Nava added four aces at the serving line. Janesa Lopez and Stephanie Velasquez combined for 23 assists and Xienna Novoa added 22 digs.

Last Friday the Lady Mustangs team suffered their first league loss to Pacific Grove. Hollyn Hearne had 16 kills and 13 digs, while Hayden Munoz and Jordan Davis combined for nine kills and four blocks. Janesa Lopez added 27 assists and nine digs, and Xienna Novoa had 32 digs and two aces.

“The team fought hard and played great defense,” Domingos said. “They did not let the ball hit the floor without themselves hitting the floor. We had a quick turn around as we participated in the Everett Alvarez Eagle Classic.”

King City started off the tournament with straight wins over Rancho San Juan, Del Mar and Gonzales. In pool play, the Lady Mustangs were placed in the gold bracket for the afternoon. They won a hard-fought match against Monte Vista from Cupertino for the championship.

“It was an exciting, well-played match by both teams having to go three sets,” Domingos said. “In the end, we came out on top to beat Monte Vista, 2-1, to become the champions. It was a great way to end the week.”

King City played against Salinas High on Tuesday and will travel to the Peninsula on Thursday to play against Santa Catalina.
