KING CITY — United Way Monterey County staff members and other volunteers recently helped spruce up the playground at Alegria Migrant and Seasonal Head Start in King City.

“Playgrounds are essential safe spaces where children can learn and grow while developing crucial cognitive, physical, social and emotional skills,” said Katy Castagna, president and CEO of United Way Monterey County. “We are especially excited to host this event at the CAPSLO King City Alegria, a partnering preschool for the Monterey County Preschool Service Corps program.”

The Monterey County Preschool Service Corps program recruits AmeriCorps members to serve in preschool classrooms throughout the county. Members provide individualized language and literacy tutoring to children to support early learning and kindergarten readiness.

On Saturday, Oct. 23, United Way partnered with 1st Capital Bank, which sponsored the spruce-up event, and AmeriCorps members serving their Day of National Service to refresh the playground and outdoor areas at the King City preschool, located at 521 N. Russ Street.

For about six hours, the volunteers took on such projects as painting, gardening, cleaning and installing new equipment. Some of the tasks included building planter boxes and planting flowers as well as assembling a children’s bench.
