KING CITY — Sara Godinez was announced to be in the starring role of Clara in Monterey County Dance Theatre’s upcoming “The Nutcracker Ballet” at the end of last Saturday’s “A Toast to Dance” fundraiser.

More than 250 people attended the “Toast,” during which 40 of the theatre’s dancers performed multiple vignettes to demonstrate their skills. Monterey County Dance Foundation hosted the event at the Salinas Valley Fairgrounds in King City.

The local dance studio performs “Nutcracker” every December, except for 2020, and the role of Clara is highly sought by the dance students.

Godinez began her dancing with the studio at age 4 in 2015.

The July 31 fundraiser concluded with the cast announcement, as well as a final “Nutcracker” dance by the 2019 Clara, Chloe Arriaga, who then handed off the nutcracker doll to Godinez.

MCDT director Janette Harkness said the group was excited about the prospect of once again performing the ballet for King City audiences.
