KING CITY — Last Sunday’s shooting that injured a 19-year-old man in King City has been determined to be accidental and self-inflicted, according to investigators from the Major Crimes Investigations Unit.

King City police officers found the Hispanic male suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound to the upper body at a residence in the 300 block of S. Vanderhurst Avenue on Feb. 25 at about 4:48 p.m. The victim was taken to a local hospital for treatment, where police said he is recovering and in stable condition.

The shooting — South County’s fourth gun-related incident in the past two weeks — was originally reported as an attempted homicide, but after witness statements and a thorough examination of the evidence, police determined the victim had been suffering from an apparent self-inflicted accidental gunshot wound.

The investigation was led by the Major Crimes Investigations Unit, a collaboration between Greenfield and King City police departments.
