KING CITY — Ag Against Hunger recently partnered with Rio Farms in King City for a produce field gleaning, with dozens of volunteers coming out to help harvest for the hungry.
Alicia Emberson Cask, acting executive director of Ag Against Hunger, and Jocelyn Bridson, director of environmental science and research with Rio Farms, hosted the gleaning Oct. 13.
More than 75 youth and their chaperones volunteered from the Monterey County Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints youth group, gathering 17 pallets of cauliflower in under three hours on Spreckels Road. All the cauliflower was donated to local food banks on Oct. 15.
“Since 1990, the generous donations of surplus produce from local growers and shippers have helped Ag Against Hunger bring 275 million pounds of produce to millions of hungry children, adults and seniors,” according to Cask in a news release.
In 2017, more than 17 million pounds of fresh produce was donated to local food banks, Head Start programs, Meals on Wheels and schools.
