KING CITY — A new mural dedicated to thanking those who have served in the U.S. military and first responders is being completed this week at the Salinas Valley Fair in King City.
Artist Brenda Scettrini Saglio of Salinas designed the mural to cover the side of the flower building at the fairgrounds, facing the area that is used by the local Veterans of Foreign Wars each May for their concession stand. The mural features a scene from the rural landscape of the area, with the “purple mountain majesty” of the Salinas Valley hills and a barn surrounded by oak trees.
Topping the mural is a large American Flag and the words “Thank You For Your Service.”
To help her paint the mural, Scettrini Saglio invited her daughter, Amy Friedrich of Salinas, to join her. Friedrich is currently serving as a master sergeant in the Air National Guard base at Moffett Field in Mountain View. She is a graduate of Salinas High School and has been serving her country for 13 years. This was her first time helping paint a mural.
Also joining to help with the painting project were four of Scettrini Saglio’s nieces: Brandi Schmidt, Sarah Schmidt, Kristin Iverson and Brooke Iverson, all of King City.
The mural was sponsored by Tim and Phoebe Cheney of King City. It was facilitated by Kim Schmidt, who is a supervisor of the floral department at the Salinas Valley Fair. Both the Cheneys and Kim Schmidt are active in King City in Bloom, a volunteer organization that promotes the use of art as one of the ways to beautify a town.
