LOCKWOOD ā€” In response to a longstanding need for improved emergency services in rural Southern Monterey County, a new fire station has emerged in Lockwood.

South Monterey County Fire Protection Districtā€™s new station opened its doors to the community earlier this month, showcasing the state-of-the-art building that spans an impressive 6,000 square feet.

The facility, located at 68875 Jolon Road, features a training room, two offices, a kitchen with a living space, a storage room and two furnished rooms. This marks a significant development as the fire station becomes the first in South Monterey County capable of housing permanent staff.

In addition to providing accommodations for personnel, the station can store additional apparatus, and it boasts a dedicated training center for future firefighters.

As a volunteer-based fire station, the new facility will not only respond to fires but also play a crucial role in providing medical aid. The success of the station heavily relies on community support, with four volunteers currently undergoing training to join the ranks.

Community members were able to celebrate this momentous occasion during the Feb. 17 grand-opening ceremony, which included a free barbecue. Monterey County Supervisor Chris Lopez, whose district includes South Monterey County, said it was an ā€œincredible turnout.ā€

ā€œCongratulations to the community, especially all the partners like (SSB Construction, Cal Fire BEU and In Studio Architecture) and all the amazing volunteers who made it happen,ā€ Lopez said on social media afterward. ā€œThe land was donated by the Pattersons, and all the work thatā€™s gone in has been community driven. I was happy to be a partner in making this dream a reality.ā€

Lopez continued, ā€œThis station is by and for the community of rural Southern Monterey County, and itā€™s a beauty with an incredible training facility and state-of-the-art technology. Thank you to Arroyo Seco Internet for making sure these lifesavers remain connected through your donation of technology. This is an achievement.ā€

Representatives from Cal Fire expressed their excitement about the new addition to the San Benito-Monterey Unit (BEU), emphasizing the facilityā€™s importance in bolstering emergency services in the region. The total cost of Lockwood Fire Station #43, which Cal Fire said has been 15 years in the making, was estimated at $3.5 million.
