SOUTH COUNTY — The King City boys track and field team won nine events and scored 181 points at Thursday Mission Trail Athletic League frosh-soph championship at War Memorial Stadium. Esteban Deniz was a double-event winner as he captured individual titles in the 1600 and 3200. Dominic Conricode was a double-event winner in the 65 and 300 hurdles.
King City demonstrated their strength in the throwing events by going first through fourth in the shotput and first through eighth in the discus. Kyras Headley led the shotputs throwers with a best of 44-6 and David Black was first in the discus with a best of 114-8. Other winners for King City were the 4 x 100 relay team, Bryce McEwen in the 100, and Cesar Chavez in the triple jump.
Team scores for the boys were: King City 181, Carmel 117.5, Pacific Grove 56, Stevenson 53, Soledad 44, Pacific Collegiate 12, Gonzales 11.5, Anzar 10, Marina 6, Greenfield 4, and Oakwood 1.
Danyelle Landeros of Soledad won the 400 in 62.8 and the 800 meters in a time of 2:31 to lead the Aztecs to a third place team finish. Stevenson won the frosh-soph girls team title. Alondra Alonso of Soledad won discus title with a best of 74-3. Gonzales had two frosh-soph champions as Ashley Ochoa won the 3200 in 13:06 and Veronica Rodriguez won shot put with a best of 27-6.
Girls scores were: Stevenson 112, Carmel 80, Soledad 64.5, Santa Catalina 61, Gonzales 57, Marina 44, King City 35, Pacific Grove 20, Oakwood 11, York 6, Kirby 1.5.
At Saturday’s Top 8 Meet at Los Gatos King City High was well represented in the throwing events in the frosh-soph boys division with three throwers in the discus and two in the shot put. Ashton Headley medaled with a third place finish and best of 45-3 in the shot put, while his brother Kyras placed eighth with a best of 43-11.
In the discus Kyras Headley placed 12th with a best of 102-2 and Jose Santos placed 14th with a best of 99-6.
King City distance runner Esteban Deniz placed third in the 3200 in a great time of 9:49 and teammate Ricardo Diaz also ran under ten minutes with a time of 9:51.
“It was nice to have three throwers compete in the Top 8,” said King City throwing coach Steve McEnroe. “They did really well and so did our two frosh-soph distance runners.”
All four South County high schools sent athletes to compete at the Bill Kearney Invitational on Saturday at Hartnell College in Salinas.
King City medalists were: Max Pallas, 4th in the 400, 52.7; Daniel Correa, 4th in the 3200, 10:29; Jhames Bautista, 2nd in the 110 hurdles, 17.1 and 6th in the 300 hurdles, 45.7; Dylan Oliveros, 6th in the triple jump, 37-11 ¼; Kevin Pena, 5th in the high jump, 5-3; and Carlos Espinoza 5th in the 3200, 10:35. Frosh-soph medalists for King City were: Josh Riley, 5th in the 3200, 10:33; Oscar Delgado, 6th in the 3200, 10:39; David Black, 3rd in the 65 hurdles in 10.7, 1st in the pole in 9-6; Allen Rocha, 6th in the 65 hurdles, 12.4 and 4th in the 300 hurdles, 49.8; Juan Acosta, 2nd in the shot put, 41-5 ½ and third in the discus, 96-4; Francisco Sandoval, 4th in the shot put, 39-7 and first in the discus, 97-7.
Gonzales High had Pablo Villasenor place first in the discus with a personal best of 143-9 and Matthew Cortez placed second in the triple jump with a best of 40-1 ¼. Greenfield’s Rodrigo Frias won the varsity 3200 in 10:10 and Luis Meza placed third in the 3200 in 10:29 and placed third in the mile in 4:36. Mauricio Arias placed sixth in the 1600 in 4:41.
Soledad medal winners in the varsity boys division were: Jesus Rodriguez, 2nd in the 400, 51.2 and third in the 800, 2:08; Ulises Camarena, 5th in the 110 hurdles in 17.4 and third in the 300 hurdles, 43.1; the 4 x 100 relay team placed 5th in 46.0.
King City thrower Cassidy Flores placed 6th in the varsity girls shot put with a best of 26-5 and took second in the discus at 100-8. Teammate Stephanie Politron placed third in the discus at 91-1. In the frosh-soph division Kajara Rodgers of King City placed first in the 100 meters in 13.2 and teammate Jalen Mendez placed sixth in 14.0. Mendez also placed third in the high jump (4-5), fifth in the long jump 14-4 ½, and first in the triple jump (30-6 ½). Milagros Ortega placed fifth in the 3200 (13:35) and Daniela Bedolla placed 6th in the 3200 in 14:48.
Soledad’s Noora Hautamaki won the long jump (17-4), triple jump (36-6 ½), and shot put (34-7) in the varsity girls division. Other Aztec placers in the varsity division were: Denise Virgen, 2nd in the 200, in 28.1, and 4th in the 400, 64.7; Danyelle Landeros, 3rd in the 400, 61.2; Angelyna Ragsdale placed 6th the 400 in 74.1.
Tomorrow in King City all four South County teams will compete in the Daines-Stireman Meet at War Memorial Stadium. On Saturday, May 5, the Mission Trail Athletic League Championships will take place at Pacific Grove High School.
