KING CITY — Grace Shepherd had 17 kills and five blocks as the King City Lady Mustang volleyball swept host Alisal High — 25-20, 29-27 and 25-14 — last Thursday night at the Trojan gym in Salinas. The game was the first non-league of the season for King City.

Nancy Andrade added five kills and nine digs, Ivy Hearne and Kayla Silva had 14 assists each and Vanessa Wheeler finished the game with two blocks.

“It was a good first game against Alisal,” said Lady Mustang head coach Christine Luna. “We are excited for our first home game on Tuesday and hope to put another good game together. Senior Nancy Andrade has continued her great play all-around and especially in the back row. Grace Shepherd is back for her senior year to be a great force in the front row. We have the addition of sophomore Vanessa Wheeler at middle front this year who already has showed great improvement to go along with our other middle Jalen Mendez who had shown a lot more confidence over last year. Our two setters Kayla Silva and Ivy Hearne are forming great connections with our hitters to help run our offense. This week’s game should be tough matchups and we are excited to be getting into league play.”

In the JV match, the Lady Broncos lost in two games to the Alisal Trojan team.

“We came out strong but in the last game we had a few more errors,” said Lady Bronco head coach Sarah Shepherd. “By the time we sorted it out we had dug ourselves into a pretty deep hole. Sophomore Windi Weatherwax had some great digs and Johana Valdez led the team in kills.”

In games this week, the Lady Mustangs and Lady Broncos hosted the North Salinas Vikings yesterday and will play on the Monterey Peninsula tomorrow against the host Seaside High Spartans.
