MONTEREY COUNTY — Hitchcock Road Animal Services, an animal shelter serving Monterey County and the City of Salinas, will be participating in the first-ever California Adopt-a-Pet Day scheduled for Saturday, June 1.

This statewide initiative, organized by the California Animal Welfare Association (CalAnimals), San Francisco Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SF SPCA) and ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), aims to find loving homes for over 2,024 shelter pets across California.

More than 150 animal shelters and organizations throughout the state will be offering free adoptions as part of this groundbreaking event. The ASPCA has committed to covering adoption fees for participating shelters, ensuring that the adoption process is accessible to all.

“California shelters are facing enormous pressures due to overcrowding conditions, as the number of animals entering shelters is outpacing those leaving,” said Jill Tucker, CEO of CalAnimals. “By increasing adoption demand and encouraging pet-ready families to visit their local shelter first, we can make a change.”

Potential adopters can visit Hitchcock Road Animal Services, located at 160 Hitchcock Road in Salinas, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on June 1 to meet pets in search of their forever home. Adoptable pets can be viewed online at hitchcockroadanimals.org.

Cindy Burnham, HRAS administrator, said, “We encourage everyone to consider adopting a pet during California Adopt-a-Pet Day. By opening your heart and home to a shelter pet, you’re not only giving them a second chance at happiness but also enriching your own life in countless ways.”

In addition to free adoptions at HRAS on June 1, there will be free dog licensing for all adoptions, food trucks and freebies.

“HRAS is committed to promoting responsible pet ownership and finding forever homes for animals in need,” stated HRAS in a news release. “Join us on June 1 as we unite with animal welfare organizations across California for this historic adoption event.”
